Linkcity nurtures some ‘Big Ideas’June 11th 2021
Since partnering with Solutions for the Planet (S4TP) last year, Linkcity has been working with them on their ‘Big Ideas Programme’, a competition in which groups of students aged between 11-14 put together a business plan to help solve a prevalent sustainability challenge in our society. Not only were we involved in judging the regional pre-selection phase of their Big Ideas Programme last month, but some of our team have also been mentoring pupils from the Stratford School Academy, helping them progress their ideas.
George Bagshaw, Graduate Development Officer, and Brian Spencer, Development Director shared some insight into how the mentoring is going.
Brian said, ‘It has been great to be part of such a well organised ‘Big Ideas’ event by Solutions for the Planet and to share in the imaginative thoughts of the teams. As a mentor to one of the finalists, I have been impressed with their dedication to the competition despite the Covid limitations. Their creative ideas have been consistently outstanding, and the quality of the final submission was phenomenal. I wish them luck for the future and hope this inspires them to be the sustainable leaders of the future!’
George said, ‘As part of my role as a mentor for Solutions for the Planet’s big ideas programme, I have been providing support and advice for the students taking part. Each week, I review and comment on my group’s business idea and we work to combine wacky original and ambitious ideas with a more commercial, practical approach.
‘It has been really amazing to see such passion and drive from the students to tackle such big global issues. The experience as a mentor has filled me with so much more optimism for the future fight against climate change. It has been so refreshing to witness the intelligence, willingness and awareness of students so young wanting to make a difference not just in their own lives but also their own communities in any way that they can.’
We look forward to hearing the results of the next phase of the competition that happened yesterday; the Regional Finals!
