Project Overview

Linkcity’s Uliving and investment partner Equitix worked together with the University of Essex to create this high-spec scheme featuring town houses and student cluster flats.

LCY_The-Meadows_3

The Meadows was a wide-ranging project where Linkcity both developed new student accommodation units, updated existing rooms and created a new student hub at the University of Essex’s Colchester campus.

A project that was expansive and ambitious in scope, The Meadows was the first phase of a high-spec scheme delivered by Uliving, Linkcity’s specialist student accommodation arm. The vibrant development comprised a combination of town house flats and student cluster flats organised around ‘The Hub’, a dedicated student-centric space including a common room, a laundrette and shop.

Designed for Students

Located near the River Colne estuary, close to the Essex Business School and a ten-minute walk from the University of Essex central campus, this phase of The Meadows was designed to give students a sense of their own community. Linkcity delivered 648 new student accommodation units arranged in either town house flats or cluster flats for between five and seven students. The focal point of the project being the social pavilion, ‘The Hub’ featuring a common room, shop for last-minute essentials and a launderette.

Building a Cohesive Scheme

The buildings at The Meadows were designed both in accordance with the University of Essex’s masterplan and the Colchester borough council’s design framework. In developing our proposal, Uliving were able to demonstrate that the massing of the buildings complemented both the existing built environment as well as that set out by the masterplan. In addition, we were able to deliver a project with excellent environmental credentials: a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’; an EPC rating of A; and Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Delivered on Schedule

We succeeded in meeting some very challenging timetables with less than a year to handover the accommodation to the university. Key to achieving this was the successful collaboration of all partners and the commitment and expertise of everyone involved.
