Hallsville Quarter Selected as New Name for Canning Town Centre Development

The £600 million regeneration of Canning Town Centre in East London has been given a new name to commemorate the significance of this transformational scheme and to create a strong and distinct identity for what is set to become the vibrant heart of Canning Town.

After extensive consultation between the scheme’s developer Bouygues Development and key stakeholders within the borough, Hallsville Quarter has been selected as the new name for the Town Centre. The name draws on the area’s rich cultural heritage, referencing the name of the original settlement of the Canning Town Centre site in the mid 19th century, known as ‘Hallsville’.

Hoardings have just been erected around the Hallsville Quarter site in preparation for the scheme’s construction programme which Bouygues Development’s sister company Bouygues UK is due to start in the final quarter of 2012. The six hectare site will reconnect the areas north and south of the A13 flyover to create a vibrant and accessible Town Centre. The first phase of Hallsville Quarter will comprise 179 residential units of private and affordable housing, and a Morrisons supermarket of over 7,000 square metres. All affordable homes will be managed by One Housing Group, consortium partner of Bouygues Development.

Hallsville Quarter is due to be completed in late 2014, establishing a lasting legacy for Canning Town.

Speaking of the name selected, Stephane Slama-Royer, Managing Director of Bouygues Development, said:

It is very exciting to see all the hoardings which now surround the site, making the first phase of this transformational scheme a reality.”

Cllr Conor McAuley , Executive Member for Regeneration and Strategic Planning at the London Borough of Newham, said:

“ Canning Town has a strong identity and a rich history.  Naming the new development Hallsville Quarter draws on this and is a key milestone in helping to establish the new town centre.  This scheme is being delivered very much for the local community and residents have been at its heart from the start.

“Work will begin on the construction of the development later this year, bringing more community facilities, new housing and additional jobs to the area.  This development demonstrates how Newham working with Bouygues Development is bringing together physical and social regeneration to form strong, prosperous and resilient communities.”
