Educational partnerships continue at Pontoon Dock

Linkcity and Bouygues UK have been working with the London Design and Engineering UTC to give students an insight into careers in a number of different areas of design, construction and engineering, as well as an opportunity to follow the progress of a live construction site.

Linkcity, the developer, and Bouygues UK, the main contractor of the Pontoon Dock development – which is creating 154 high-quality private rented homes and 82 affordable homes for rental or shared ownership next to the Thames Barrier Park in east London – organised six guest lectures over a six-month period, as well as four site visits to monitor progress at the scheme.

Lectures included sessions on property development, building design regulations, secure design, sustainability in construction, waste management in construction and property maintenance.

As part of their studies, students were also tasked with developing designs for a social space for residents and the community for the Pontoon Dock site. Each of the 11 students prepared drawings and a model to present their ideas to the site team alongside Linkcity and its partner, Grainger.

The relationship with the UTC is part of a broader programme of training and community relations activities, including work experience placements, school and university visits and providing on-site roles for trainees and apprentices.

Linkcity’s Deputy Director, Oliver Campbell, said:

“In addition to bringing new, much-needed private and affordable housing for London, we are pleased to be working with local education institutions. Our programme at Pontoon Dock is helping to introduce young people to the opportunities offered by careers in property development, construction, and design & engineering. Our students share the same enthusiasm we have for creating great communities and we bring them into the Pontoon Dock project to see how we put our place-making ambitions into action.”
